We love play dough in our home. It’s a great sensory activity, works the fine motor skills and it really gets creative play moving!
Recently my daughter and I have started making our own play dough, which she loves doing. We can make large batches in one go and it turns out to be more cost efficient than regular Play-Doh.
What’s even more fun about creating DIY play dough is that you can get really creative with it. You can add different colors and play with different colors and scents.
Valentine’s Day Play Dough
With Valentine’s Day approaching, I thought it would be fun to surprise my daughter with a fresh batch of play dough that represents two of her favorite things: the color pink and glitter.

I’ve been playing around with different play dough recipes and I think we finally found our winner!
The BEST Valentine’s Day Play Dough Recipe
Ingredients
- 1 cup flour
- 1/2 cup salt
- food coloring
- 1 tbs cream of tartar
- 1 tbs oil
- 1 cup water
- glitter
Directions
- Mix flour, salt and cream of tartar in a bowl.
- Mix water and food coloring in a pot and then add oil.
- Mix the dry ingredients with wet over low heat on stove.
- Once the dough starts to form and become dry, take off the heat and allow to cool.
- Knead the play dough thoroughly.
- Add glitter and essential oil for scent, if desired.
Play dough should keep for 2-3 weeks if kept in an airtight container.
You can also add the glitter while you’re cooking the play dough. I prefer sprinkling glitter during the kneading process. I do this over a cutting board and it cleans up easy.

Valentine’s Day Play Dough Activities
We decided to use the play dough to make pretend Valentine cookies. We used a kid’s rolling pin and cut them out with a heart cookie cutter.
Happy Valentine’s Day!
